Quick and Easy Bow Tie Onsie
I'm just in love with these little bow tie onesies! Don't be afraid to mix and match your patterns either. I think that's part of the goofy/preppy charm.
Materials:
Scrap of fabric 5 X 5 1/2
Scrap of fabric 5 X 1 3/4
Matching thread
1. Lay your piece of fabric that is 5 X 5 1/2 right side up. (5 inches wide 5 1/2 tall) fold the top edge of your fabric down and the bottom edge of your fabric up so that they meet in the middle with the bottom egde overlaping the top edge by about a 1/2 of an inch. Iron in place.
2. Sew along the outside edges on either side. Flip inside out.
3. Create the shape of your bow tie by pinching the center in creating folds. Wrap with some thread several times and tie the loose ends into a knot.
4. Make the knot of your bow tie with the piece of fabric that is 5 X 1 3/4. Fold your fabric wrong sides together in half long ways.
Then open it up and fold either edge in toward the center fold line. Iron in place.
5. Iron it folded closed and stitch along both of the long edges very near to the edge (about an 1/8 of an inch in).
6. Wrap the strip of fabric around your bow tie to get an idea of how long it needs to be. Add 1/2 of an inch and trim the ends off.
7. Fold the strip in half and sew the ends together using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
8. Inside out and slip the bow tie through the "knot" making sure that the seam is on the inside of the back of the bow tie.
Here's what the backside looks like
9. Now it is time to stitch your bow tie to your onesie. You may choose to add a little interfacing to the inside of your onesie to support the fabric a little. Stitch the bow tie to the onesie going through all the layers of the knot and the bow tie, but skipping the top layer of the bowtie.
