Origami Dress Tutorial

I'm in love with these little origami dresses! Here's a quick tutorial.

1. Start with a piece of paper about 5 X 5 inches square.

2. Fold your piece of paper in half, right sides out.

3. Open your paper up and fold each side into the middle crease you just made. Give it a nice good crease.

4. Open your paper up and fold your outside creases in to meet the middle crease. Crease well.

5. Turn your paper over and fold up one end just a little short of half way, about 1/2 inch.

6. Fold the shorter side down away from the opposite edge using about a 1/2 inch in between your last crease. Crease it tightly.

This is what it should look like from the other side. The shorter side will end up being the top of the dress and the longer end will be the bottom of the dress.

7. Use your finger to hold down the center crease where the top of the dress meets the bottom of the dress and pull the bottom corner out until the fold is completely open. Crease it in place to create the pleats in the skirt.

8. Create the neckline by by folding down the inner corners at right angles keeping it very symetrical.

9. Unfold the creases you just made and flip your dress over. Pull down in the center of the top layer of paper in between the creases you just made to create the neckline.

10. Fold in the sides of the top of the dress right up to the corner of the neckline. Don't worry about the bottom of the dress for now.

11. Now create a diagonal crease from the waistline to the very bottom of the dress so that it is completely open at the bottom.

12. If you were to flip it over, it should look like this.

13. To create the cap sleeve from the backside Make another diagonal crease from the waistline to the top of the neckline opening the top all the way and leaving the waistline folded completely in. Crease well.

14. Flip it over and VOILA!

15. Add any embellishments you wish.

These little dresses reminded me of a beautiful framed vintage map dress from Baby and Child.

I totally want to make one of these using a real map, but for now this will have to do :-)
